ZA/UM’s Ideological Legacy: Why Zero Parades Keeps the ‘Sad Communist’ Spirit Alive

At Digital Tech Explorer, we closely follow the intersection of narrative innovation and software development. Few titles have disrupted the RPG landscape as profoundly as Disco Elysium. It was a game where melancholy Marxism didn’t just exist in the background—it radiated from every line of dialogue. This was a direct reflection of its creators, including the now-departed Robert Kurvitz, who famously described the story as “essentially Soviet.”

Following the highly publicized and messy internal fractures at ZA/UM in 2022, fans and tech enthusiasts alike wondered if the studio’s soul had departed with its founders. Would their upcoming project, Zero Parades, retain that sharp ideological edge?

During this year’s GDC, writer Honey Watson addressed the presence of “mournful communists” still working within the studio’s walls with a resounding: “Yes!

Spies, Ideology, and Player Agency

While the creative team continues to lean into radical perspectives, the gameplay philosophy for Zero Parades emphasizes flexibility. Unlike rigid narrative structures, the game aims to provide a spectrum of player choices regarding political and personal alignment.

“You are a spy for the communist Superbloc,” explains principal writer Siim Sinamäe. “However, the motivation behind that espionage is yours to define. People spy for ideology, money, or even simple self-actualization. You can choose to embrace post-historical materialism or sweep it under the rug entirely.”

A Narrative Shift: Memory vs. Amnesia

One of the most significant technical shifts in storytelling between the two titles involves the protagonist’s mental state. In Disco Elysium, players navigated the world through the amnesiac fog of Harrier Du Bois. In Zero Parades, lead character Hershel Wilks has her memories fully intact, creating a different type of role-playing experience.

Feature Disco Elysium Zero Parades
Protagonist Harrier Du Bois Hershel Wilks
Mental State Total Amnesia Fully Intact Memories
Political Starting Point Blank Slate / Radicalization Former Bourgeois / Defector
Core Theme Existential Dread & Failure Espionage & Materialism

Watson notes that while Disco allowed for a slow process of radicalization, Hershel’s journey is one of reassessment. She grew up in a bourgeois environment and chose to defect to a communist state, even taking a bullet for the cause. The gameplay loop allows you to determine if she still believes in that cause or if she has begun to question her loyalties.

Maintaining the Intellectual Gravity

This agency mirrors the freedom found in ZA/UM’s previous work, where players could steer toward centrism, ultraliberalism, or fascism. However, the “gravity” of the game world remains rooted in deep political theory.

Whether Zero Parades can capture the lightning-in-a-bottle brilliance of its predecessor remains to be seen. However, with the remaining writing team dedicated to maintaining a complex, ideologically driven world, it appears the “sad communists” of ZA/UM aren’t done telling stories just yet.
