As someone who spends a significant amount of time exploring virtual worlds and analyzing the latest in gaming technology, I have a confession: any time I see a horse in a game, I immediately stop and rush the majestic beast with a total lack of self-preservation. It might not be the most logical approach to a digital wild animal, but unless it belongs to an enemy faction, it is hard to resist the pull of a faithful steed.
Most players likely share this same “can I ride that?” reaction when encountering a stallion in the wild. It is a sentiment second only to the universal urge to pet a dog, though arguably more rewarding when that horse provides essential utility for traversing massive open worlds.
Following our previous look at digital companions, I have decided it is time to honor the faithful steeds of PC gaming with their very own trivia challenge. While diving into the research for this, I realized two interesting things about the current state of gaming. First, many of these iconic horses lack canonical names. Second, with Sony’s recent trend of PC ports, it is a crime that we haven’t seen a native version of Shadow of the Colossus yet. To keep this focused on direct PC releases, you won’t see Agro or Epona on this list—please, hold your pitchforks!
