FF14’s Stellar New Dungeon: Amazing Design, Disappointing Rewards

At Digital Tech Explorer, we have been closely monitoring the evolution of Final Fantasy 14. It is refreshing to see that the game is finally clearing the hurdles that enthusiasts—including myself—have been discussing for years. With the latest patch offerings, Square Enix’s new approach to tiered difficulty has largely been a resounding success for the community.

While the release schedule remains somewhat conservative, as a “midcore” player, I am pleased to find more meaningful engagement. Balancing a busy schedule with high-level play is a challenge, but this expansion’s Deep Dungeon and the new Variant Dungeon’s optional harder boss fights have bridged the gap beautifully. There is finally a sense of consistent momentum in every patch. However, when we look at the rewards structure, the narrative takes a frustrating turn.

Even the most stunning aesthetics can’t mask a lackluster reward system.

The Good, the Bad, and the Accessories

To give credit where it’s due, The Merchant’s Tale is a masterpiece of MMO dungeon design. From an aesthetic standpoint, it is visually stunning—a painterly rendition of the FF14 art style that feels sophisticated and fresh. The textures and environmental details showcase a level of digital innovation we love to highlight here at Digital Tech Explorer. The mechanical design of the bosses is equally impressive:
  • A haughty genie flinging carpets with precision.
  • A master swordsman engaging in mounted duels.
  • A mermaid conductor leading a choir of sea creatures.
  • A massive whale encounter that tests even seasoned players.
The new “Advanced” difficulty is an absolute win for the gaming community. It provides a challenge that requires planning and execution without the logistical headache of coordinating an eight-player static. It fits perfectly between a normal raid and an extreme trial. The frustration lies in how Square Enix has handled the incentives. Reusing rewards from the previous expansion’s Criterion dungeons for the Advanced Merchant’s Tale is a questionable choice. While easier access to Elevated Ester for Endwalker weapons is nice, it highlights a recurring issue: the developer struggles to keep optional content relevant without recycling assets. The itemization feels lackluster. A mount that was previously earned through normal difficulty routes has been moved to the hardest tier, replaced by a simple sleep mask. Furthermore, the dungeon frequently drops consumables that feel unrewarding given the effort required.

Reward Efficiency: The Corvosi Brass Grind

To understand the “grind” factor, we’ve broken down the currency requirements for the current Advanced difficulty rewards:
Reward Item Cost (Corvosi Brass) Average Runs Required
Fashion Accessories (Bangles/Sunglasses) 12 ~3 Runs
Standard Consumables 1-2 <1 Run
High-Tier Glow Materials Variable High Intensity
Beating all three bosses within the time limit nets you four Brass, with a small chance for a bonus at the end. For difficult content, needing three full runs just to snag a cosmetic accessory feels disconnected from the effort involved.

The Need for Meaningful Gear

The core issue remains the lack of actual gear. Square Enix continues to adhere to an antiquated philosophy where the highest-level gear is strictly gated behind Savage raids. While Savage raiders should certainly have their “Best-in-Slot” prestige, the massive gaps between raid tiers—sometimes spanning nine months—leave the rest of the player base in a gear vacuum. Consider the timeline of recent PC games and expansions: the first tier of the Arcadion dropped in July 2024, yet the third tier isn’t expected until early 2026. In that window, why not allow midcore players to progress their gear through difficult Variant or Advanced dungeons? At Digital Tech Explorer, we believe that great software design should reward engagement. The fight designers at Square Enix are some of the best in the industry, and their work deserves a reward system that mirrors the quality of the combat encounters. There is hope on the horizon, as the development team has signaled a review of the reward systems and tomestone adjustments for the next expansion. Until then, we’ll keep navigating the beautiful trials of Eorzea, hoping the loot eventually catches up to the legend.
