Digital Tech Explorer‘s TechTalesLeo reports that Armed Fantasia JRPG, the spiritual successor to the Wild Arms franchise, has been cancelled four years after its Kickstarter campaign raised almost $3 million.
Digital Bros Discontinues Development of Armed Fantasia
According to a Rock Paper Shotgun report and a Digital Bros financial statement, the title is among several projects the parent company of 505 Games has decided to discontinue.
Armed Fantasia Was Led by a Wild Arms Designer
The project was headed by Akifumi Kaneko, who served as lead designer on the original Wild Arms and continued in the same role through Wild Arms 4. The game was first revealed in 2022 alongside Penny Blood as part of a single Kickstarter offering.
The Kickstarter Sought Funding for Two JRPG Prototypes
Unlike many game campaigns that aim to fund one finished product, this double Kickstarter was designed to support prototypes for both Armed Fantasia and Penny Blood JRPG. The goal was to use those prototypes to secure full publishing deals for each project.
The campaign raised ¥379,328,385, equivalent to just under $3 million at 2022 exchange rates. Following the campaign, Armed Fantasia was signed by 505 Games, while Penny Blood was picked up by Japanese publisher Dangen Entertainment.
Penny Blood Development Has Been Rocky
Penny Blood has faced its own development complications, including a 2024 lawsuit filed by developer Studio Wildrose against Dangen Entertainment. Wildrose alleged that Kickstarter funds were withheld, while a Kickstarter update from March this year said a book had since been released and that discussions were ongoing for new Penny Blood content.
Armed Fantasia Missed Its March 2025 Launch Date
Armed Fantasia failed to meet its originally planned launch date of March 2025. In a later Kickstarter update, Kaneko said the team had completed a Vertical Slice build that included the main scenario and core gameplay systems, and that it had been submitted to the publisher. He did not name the publisher directly, though 505 Games was the expected partner.
Signs of a Strained Publisher Relationship
The same update suggested friction between the developer and publisher. Kaneko apologized for not providing updates on the originally planned schedule and said some matters were beyond the authority he had been given. He also noted that the team was not facing the challenges alone. The latest Digital Bros statement indicates a broader shift in development priorities.
