Fallout Season 2 Character Levels: A Deep Dive into XP and Progression

Amazon’s Fallout TV show season 2 has come to a close, delivering a masterclass in how to blend cinematic storytelling with the deep-rooted mechanics of an RPG. While some loose ends were tied up, the finale teased even more for the upcoming season 3, which is slated to start filming soon. But at Digital Tech Explorer, we like to look beyond the emotional character arcs and dive into the cold, hard data. Just like a software engineer debugging a complex script, we’re breaking down our main characters’ progress into levels and XP.

Spoilers ahead for Fallout season 2

Lucy holding a crowbar
Lucy navigating the wasteland with a trusty crowbar.

At the end of the first season, the power rankings for our protagonists were slightly skewed. Despite being the primary focus, Lucy only managed to reach level 8, while The Ghoul sat at a formidable level 89. Maximus hit level 9, and Thaddeus took a shortcut to level 50 after his “accidental” ghoulification. To wrap up season 2, I’ve taken stock of their actions across all eight episodes to see who truly mastered the Wasteland’s survival mechanics.

The Methodology

To keep our analysis consistent, I used the Fallout 3 framework for leveling. This remains the most accurate model, as characters like Lucy frequently demonstrate specific tagged skills such as Repair, Science, and Speech. All characters are analyzed under “Survival Mode” conditions, which grants boosted XP but carries higher stakes. XP is awarded for discovering major locations, defeating Wasteland creatures (with bonuses for high-tier threats like Deathclaws), and completing major quest milestones.

Lucy MacLean: The Struggling Diplomat

Ella Purnell (Lucy MacLean) in FALLOUT SEASON 2
Lucy MacLean facing the harsh realities of the surface world.

Total XP Gained: 1,150 XP

Lucy didn’t quite see the meteoric rise we expected. This was largely due to failing her primary quest: bringing her father to justice. While she held the upper hand temporarily, Hank managed to outmaneuver her by wiping his memory before she could extract the Enclave’s secrets. She also struggled with Speech checks this season, famously failing so poorly with the Legion that she ended up on a crucifix.

Notable XP Gains:

  • Hacking a high-level terminal.
  • Locating her father in a major story beat.
  • Defending herself against Radscorpions.
  • Eliminating the ghoulified Kings gang during a drug-fueled encounter.
  • Successfully implanting a memory-wash chip.

Level Summary: Lucy is currently sitting at Level 9 (6,207 total XP). She is exactly 993 XP away from hitting double digits. Hopefully, her season 3 build focuses more on combat efficiency.

The Ghoul: The High-Level Veteran

Walton Goggins (The Ghoul) in FALLOUT SEASON 2
The Ghoul continues his century-long quest for answers.

Total XP Gained: 1,640 XP

Season 2 was business as usual for The Ghoul. While his XP gain slowed down compared to the first season, he remains the heavy hitter of the group. His biggest hurdle remains his personal quest to find his family; while he has a lead, the management vault turned out to be a dead end.

Notable XP Gains:

  • Wiping out a raider camp and several Radroaches.
  • Teaming up with Thaddeus and Maximus to slay a New Vegas Deathclaw.
  • Reactivating Mr. House using Cold Fusion.

Minor Achievement: He successfully used Buffout to help Lucy overcome her hesitance toward lethal force. While morally gray, it certainly helped her combat stats.

Level Summary: He remains at Level 89. Given the level caps in modern 3D Fallout titles, he is nearing the absolute pinnacle of Wasteland power.

Maximus: The Rising Knight

Aaron Moten (Maximus) in FALLOUT SEASON 2
Maximus proving his worth to the Brotherhood of Steel.

Total XP Gained: 1,215 XP

Maximus entered the season just 600 XP shy of Level 10, and we’re happy to report he crossed that threshold. His “Tank” build is finally coming together, especially during his fistfight against a Brotherhood Knight from the Coronado Chapter, which earned him significant reputation points.

Notable XP Gains:

  • Defeating Xander Harkness while utilizing Power Armor.
  • Neutralizing a rogue Securitron.
  • Contributing to the defeat of multiple New Vegas Deathclaws.

Level Summary: Maximus is now Level 10 (7,875 total XP). With the NCR and Legion conflict looming, he is perfectly positioned to hit Level 11 early in the next season.

Thaddeus: The Wild Card

Total XP Gained: 790 XP

Thaddeus remains the most entertaining character to track. He plays the game like a chaotic-neutral player wandering aimlessly but surviving through sheer luck. His XP gain was modest this season, but his “biological evolution” remains a concern.

Notable XP Gains:

  • Managing a caps-processing labor operation.
  • Assisting in the New Vegas Deathclaw fight.
  • Evading the Brotherhood of Steel while in possession of Cold Fusion.

Level Summary: He holds at Level 50 for now. However, if his mutation turns out to be a Centaur transformation rather than Ghoulification, we may have to reset his stats to Level 7 (3,786 XP) to reflect his loss of human skill-tree access.

Norm MacLean: The Vault Specialist

Total XP Gained: 1,530 XP

Norm finally left the safety of the Vault, albeit under duress. While his physical stats are low, his Intelligence-based gains were impressive this season. He successfully navigated the cryopods and managed to outsmart Vault-Tec’s junior management through clever dialogue choices.

Level Summary: Norm reaches Level 4. His survival in the Radroach attack was a critical milestone, though it relied heavily on RNG luck.

Hank MacLean: The Corporate Shadow

Total XP Gained: 2,355 XP

Hank proved to be the most efficient XP earner this season. Operating with a high-level corporate build, he managed to secure Vault-Tec’s underground New Vegas facility and successfully report back to The Enclave. Even with a memory wipe, his “Business” and “Stealth” skills carried him through.

Level Summary: Level ???. Hank operates more like a high-level NPC or a mid-game boss, making his true level difficult to quantify, though his efficiency is undeniable.

Season 2 Final Level Standings

Character Starting Level Season 2 XP Gained Current Level
The Ghoul 89 1,640 89 (Maxed)
Thaddeus 50 790 50
Maximus 9 1,215 10
Lucy MacLean 8 1,150 9
Norm MacLean 2 1,530 4

As we look forward to the next chapter, it’s clear that the stakes are rising. Whether you’re playing through Minecraft mods or exploring the ruins of New Vegas, tracking these stats helps us appreciate the intricate design behind the show.
