The Collector Leviathan: Design and Characteristics

The development team aimed to create a creature that was “distinct from Leviathans in our previous Subnautica games,” according to Cory Strader, the visual development lead. After exploring a wide range of shapes and silhouettes through thumbnail sketches, a Cthulhu-inspired design resonated most with the team.

Delving into the design brief, this colossal entity – the Collector Leviathan – is chillingly described as “Intelligent but easily irritable, it disdains players, tadpoles, tridents, and anything it does not recognise.” This terrifying beast leverages its four powerful tentacles to “grab, crush, swat, and terrify players,” guaranteeing it will be a formidable and unforgettable threat in the deep waters of Subnautica 2.

Player Encounters and Evasion Strategies

Player interactions with the Collector Leviathan are meticulously designed to be dynamic and terrifying. “Our main goal with creatures was to make them feel reactive,” explains gameplay lead engineer Antonio Munoz Gallego, noting that this leviathan is “constantly re-evaluating the situation in real time.” This apex predator spawns in the sparse plains biome when a player enters its domain, typically appearing some 20-25,000 units away. Fortunately, for the quick-witted, survival is possible. The creature communicates its shifting moods with distinct sounds, offering vital clues when agitated. While hiding from the Collector might offer a brief reprieve, it will relentlessly search for several minutes. True escape demands putting a staggering 45,000 units of distance between yourself and the beast, at which point it will finally despawn.

For those less fortunate players who fail to escape its clutches, a truly gruesome fate awaits. Game designer Louis Karim has meticulously crafted a set piece depicting the terrifying spectacle of being consumed by the creature. Yet, even in demise, there’s a peculiar silver lining: Senior technical animator Stefaan Sorensen proudly states that the team has perfected the tentacle grab animation, promising, “When the tentacle grabs the player, or vehicle, when all the systems are working together, this provides a fairly cool visual experience.” So, even as your journey ends, players are guaranteed a spectacularly chilling visual for their final moments in Subnautica 2.
