In a significant moment for the gaming industry, audio director Dan Forden, a name synonymous with one of gaming’s most iconic catchphrases, has officially concluded his remarkable tenure at NetherRealm. While his time at the studio began with its founding in April 2010, Forden’s profound influence on digital sound design stretches back an incredible 36 years, rooted in the legacy of Midway Chicago. From his initial sound credit on the 1989 arcade basketball game Arch Rivals, Forden cemented his place in gaming lore as the voice and face behind the legendary “Toasty!” – an unforgettable exclamation following a particularly potent uppercut in the iconic Mortal Kombat series.
“Wednesday was my last day at Netherrealm. We made a lot of fun stuff over the years. I’m really proud of what we accomplished as well as how much fun we had making that stuff,” Forden shared in a heartfelt farewell post on Instagram, marking the end of an era for the acclaimed fighting game studio.
Unveiling the Iconic ‘Toasty!’ Origins
Dan Forden was an integral part of the small, pioneering team that crafted the original Mortal Kombat in 1992, working alongside visionaries Ed Boon, John Tobias, and artist John Vogel. When development commenced on the highly anticipated sequel, Forden once again helmed the game’s crucial sound and music design. The legendary “Toasty!” moment, an image of Forden popping into the screen’s corner to exclaim the word, originated as an ingenious inside joke, a brainchild of Ed Boon. Its roots trace back to their earlier work on the Midway football game Super High Impact.
“I’d say ‘I predict toast,’ like ‘you’re toast,’ and somehow that turned into ‘I predict toasty,’” Forden recounted in a revealing behind-the-scenes interview. This quirky phrase, a staple of their studio banter, found its way into the gaming world after a colleague suggested incorporating their “weird stuff” into the games. Boon seized the opportunity, immortalizing the moment in the groundbreaking fighting game sequel, Mortal Kombat 2.
The beloved “Toasty!” soundbite transcended its origins, reappearing with fanfare in the highly popular arcade fighter, Mortal Kombat 3, where it even evolved into “Crispy!” for one of Scorpion’s signature fatalities. Its enduring charm ensured its presence in Mortal Kombat 4 and continued into the modern 3D iterations developed by NetherRealm. Though Forden has departed, his indelible mark on the studio remains, visibly celebrated in a photo from his farewell post, featuring a sticker of his classic MK3-era “Toasty” self adorning a bathroom mirror.
“I love the little touches that people left around the studio like this little Toasty homage on the bathroom mirror,” he wrote, acknowledging the creative spirit that defines the team. “There are so many smart, talented people there—look for more great things to emerge over the next several years. … I wouldn’t have lasted 37 years in the industry if fans weren’t out there playing the games we made. Thanks to all of you for supporting what we’ve done. Live long and… Toasty!” Forden’s farewell is not just an exit but a celebration of a career that shaped digital entertainment, reminding us all of the enduring power of sound, humor, and dedicated craftsmanship in the tech world. At Digital Tech Explorer, we celebrate such pioneers who push the boundaries of gaming and tech, making every interaction more engaging and memorable.
