Rafa’s trait is Overdrive: Activating an action skill triggers an Overdrive state, significantly increasing damage dealt from all sources and boosting movement speed. Crucially, while an action skill remains active, Overdrive’s duration is paused, extending its potent effects.
Now, let’s dive into the core of Rafa’s mastery with our expertly crafted builds, beginning with the consistently robust Remote Agent/Peacebreaker setup. For clarity, I’ve outlined skills, augments, and capstones in a strategic acquisition order, though remember the flexibility to respec and fine-tune your approach as you progress through Borderlands 4.
Rafa build: Bullet-Buddy (Remote Agent/Peacebreaker)
- Primary skill tree: Remote Agent
- Action skill: Peacebreaker Cannons
- Best skills for class mods: Instigator legendary class mod for points in Sitiar, Deft Hands, Maestro, Asymmetric Warfare
- Recommended items: Hot Slugger (legendary shotgun), Lucian’s Flank (legendary assault rifle), Kaoson (legendary SMG), Instigator (legendary class mod), Firewerks (legendary shield)
- Firmware: Deadeye, Trickshot
- Specialisations: Now With Caffeine, I Am A Gun, A Honed Mind, Riddle You This
While perhaps less flashy than Arc-Knives, the Bullet-Buddy build focused on Rafa’s Peacebreaker Cannons offers exceptionally consistent and high-impact returns. This “fire-and-forget” action skill simply deploys shoulder-mounted cannons, proving perfect for both boss encounters and clearing out mobs.
Before detailing the skills, let’s consider the weapon choices. For mobbing, the Hot Slugger (a prime beneficiary of the Vitriol perk) or Lucian’s Flank are excellent. However, for boss fights, the Kaoson becomes your top priority. Thanks to the Bullet Buddy Deluxe augment, you can unload three or four magazines worth of sticky bombs onto a boss, which then detonate upon reloading, delivering immense damage. This strategy is often overkill for normal enemies, making it less efficient for general combat.
This is, naturally, a highly gun-focused build, necessitating maxing out perks like Sitiar for additional gun damage and Deft Hands to boost the fire rate for both Rafa and his cannons. Further down the tree, Vitriol causes your first shot from a full magazine to deal bonus corrosive damage, which can lead to massive damage spikes with weapons like the Hot Slugger due to its unique interaction with indirect projectile skills. From there, Concentrated Build-Up provides bonus shock damage and a stacking damage boost while aiming.
The other primary damage source in this build is, of course, our Peacebreaker Cannons. Since you’ll also benefit from Overdrive while this skill is active, prioritizing action skill duration is key. Therefore, invest in Juerga and Inspirado to regenerate your action skill from critical hits and status effects, respectively. Meanwhile, Maestro, Asymmetric Warfare, Errant Spark, Lateral Plinking, and El Alacran combine to significantly amplify the power of your trusty shoulder cannons. Finally, max out Midnight Oil from the Arc-Knives tree to grant your cannons bonus corrosive damage, which intensifies the longer they are active—bringing us full circle with the extended uptime from Juerga and Inspirado.
Specialisations are particularly crucial here. This potent combination begins with Riddle You This, granting a stacking gun damage buff. I Am A Gun ensures your cannons also benefit from this buff, while A Honed Mind boosts their critical hit chance and crit damage. Keep in mind that when using the Double-Ought Autoshot capstone, which already provides a high critical hit chance, this leads to an explosive cascade of flaming ricochets. It’s a truly devastating cocktail of power!
Rafa build: Arcstrider (This Year’s Gimmick)
- Primary skill tree: This Year’s Gimmick
- Action skill: Arc-Knives
- Best skills for class mods: Tecnico class mod for points in Expedite, Blowout, and El Borracho
- Recommended items: Heavyweight/Timekeeper’s New Shield (legendary shields), Slippy (legendary ordnance), Tecnico (purple class mod)
- Firmware: Action Fist, Reel Big Fist
- Specialisations: Bear Arms, Groundbreaker, Contamination, The Best Defence
Rafa’s This Year’s Gimmick skill tree is a testament to Borderlands 4’s innovation, lending itself to one of the game’s most unique builds: a 100% Arc-Knives focus. While exclusively relying on melee damage won’t be ideal in every scenario—especially against flying bosses or arenas that transform into “the floor is lava”—it excels remarkably at its intended purpose.
This build revolves almost entirely around the Dead Man Walking augment, which ensures the Arc-Knives action skill never runs out. It will only conclude if you manually deactivate it using Blade Fury (or, of course, if you fall in combat). This synergizes incredibly well with Midnight Oil, El Borracho, and Cruel Accrual, all of which progressively increase your damage based on how long your action skill has been active, allowing for sustained devastation.
Naturally, you’ll need robust ways to counteract the health sacrifices imposed by Dead Man Walking and, later, the Inferno Protocol capstone, which inflicts constant fire damage on you in exchange for imbuing your Arc-Knives with fiery power. While Dead Man Walking provides an overshield when you attack enemies, Dial In, Saldar, and Sustainable Energy are crucial skills that further help you stay on your feet amidst the chaos.
The final element of this build leverages ordnance damage. Since you’ll be constantly in the enemy’s face, Booming Business’s ability to drop grenades at your feet provides significant additional area-of-effect damage. Furthermore, this also plays into Sinergia, further boosting your melee damage for a truly explosive close-range assault.
Rafa build: Gunzerker (People Person)
- Primary skill tree: People Person
- Action skill: Apophis Lance
- Best skills for class mods: Genio class mod for points in Maestro, Asymmetric Warfare, Errant Spark, and Vitriol
- Recommended items: Hot Slugger (legendary shotgun), Lucian’s Flank (legendary assault rifle), Kaoson (legendary SMG), Instigator (legendary class mod), Firewerks (legendary shield)
- Firmware: Deadeye, Trickshot
- Specialisations: Now With Caffeine, I Am A Gun, A Honed Mind, Riddle You This
Do you yearn for the high-octane days of Salvador’s Gunzerking in Borderlands 2? If so, then this Gunzerker build for Rafa is precisely what you need! It empowers you to effectively dual-wield with incredible damage potential, all without a heavy reliance on Kill Skills, offering sustained firepower.
The initial segment of this tree is dedicated to amplifying your weapon power: The Thrill significantly increases your rate of fire, Las Jaras provides crucial ammo regeneration, and Rinse allows for faster reloads when you inevitably deplete your magazines. Progressing further, you can acquire similar skills like Deadline and Sitiar to further boost your gun damage. Many of these perks are Overdrive Skills, meaning Jaque, later in the tree, can amplify these already strong effects after dealing damage with Apophis Lance.
Naturally, the core objective is to maximize Apophis Lance’s uptime. The Battery Subscription Service augment grants it an extra charge, effectively increasing its overall damage output, and the Project: Gorgon capstone transforms the weapon into a devastating laser beam. Meanwhile, Prepardo recharges your action skill upon reloading (a frequent occurrence with all the fire rate boosts), and Mate converts Jaque stacks into cooldown rate when Overdrive concludes, ensuring rapid skill cycling.
The crowning jewel, however, is Per My Last. This skill provides a chance to repeat any action skill damage, completely free of charge. What’s not to love about getting a two-for-one deal on your most impactful abilities?
Borderlands 4 Rafa leveling build
As enjoyable as the Arc-Knives playstyle can be, for a Rafa leveling build, the clear choice is the versatility of Peacebreaker Cannons. These shoulder-mounted turrets provide constant supplementary fire, blasting enemies alongside you. Their highly versatile nature (capable of ricochet shots, lasers, or firebombs, among others) makes them incredibly effective for efficient leveling. Furthermore, the Remote Agent tree offers robust defensive options, which are invaluable while you’re still progressing and optimizing your gear.
With Borderlands 4’s increased emphasis on elemental damage, particularly on harder difficulties, this build is meticulously designed for effortless elemental countering. How? By consistently dishing out multiple elemental status effects without the need for constant gear swapping. It’s a straightforward approach, yet it’s incredibly satisfying to witness the sheer absurdity and power your turrets can achieve while you also deliver heavy damage with your own weapons.
While this build doesn’t *require* specific gear to shine, certain legendary items will significantly enhance your experience. We recommend farming for a handful of legendary gear every ten or so levels. Many of these can be found in Terminus Range, making it a prime destination after leaving the Fadefields:
- Firewerks shield from Splashzone in the Riptide Grotto, Coastal Bonescapes, in Fadefields. Aim for the incendiary version to benefit from the doubled bonus damage of the Errant Spark perk.
- Aegon’s Dream assault rifle from Horace in Horace’s Oversight, Hungering Plains, in Fadefields. This legendary weapon provides a strong chance to apply both incendiary and cryo status effects.
- Hot Slugger shotgun from Callous Harbinger of Annihilating Death in the Craven’s Nook Order bunker in the Bones of Sanctuary, to the east of Terminus Range.
- Instigator class mod from Vile Lictor in the Umbral Foundry, Windspear, in Terminus Range. You must complete the His Vile Sanctum mission at the end of this region’s chapter to unlock this boss.
Beyond these specifics, keep an eye out for Jakobs and Maliwan weapons, and either a Mercenario or Genio purple class mod, as these will significantly aid your progress as you level up.
Here’s how the leveling process looks for this Rafa build:
Levels 2-6: Foundation of Firepower
- Starting in the Remote Agent tree, allocate five points into Deft Hands, which effectively increases the DPS of both Rafa and his action skill through a faster rate of fire.
- Activate the Instinto augment to significantly buff your Peacebreaker Cannons’ critical hit chance and damage, making early engagements more impactful.
Levels 7-11: Sustained Engagement
- Spend five points on Juerga to improve Peacebreaker Cannons’ uptime whenever you land a critical hit. This also efficiently counters the faster drain triggered by Instinto, making your cannons far more consistent.
- With a few points invested, this is an opportune time to farm Splashzone for a Firewerks shield, which provides excellent defensive and offensive utility early on. As mentioned, seek a fire resistance version, as this imbues its rockets with incendiary damage, synergizing with the Errant Spark skill obtainable at level 23 onwards.
Levels 12-16: Defensive Offensive
- Allocate two points into Resiliencia to gain damage reduction while Overdrive is active, pairing perfectly with the extended Overdrive duration provided by Juerga.
- Spend three points on Sitiar to increase your base gun damage. We will return to max this perk out later.
- Now is an excellent time to farm for a legendary weapon like Aegon’s Dream from the main story boss Horace, offering a significant power spike.
Levels 17-21: Indirect Power
- Sink five points into Asymmetric Warfare to boost indirect projectile damage, which includes your Peacebreaker Cannons as well as thrown weapons and other projectiles not directly fired from your gun.
Levels 22-26: Elemental Cascade
- Spend one point on Ardid to cause indirect projectiles to heal you. This means that while your turrets are active, you’ll regenerate health equal to 10% of their damage, accumulating quickly for enhanced survivability.
- Put four points into Errant Spark to grant all your indirect projectiles (most importantly, your Peacebreaker Cannons) a substantial bonus to fire damage.
- Activate the Double-Ought Autoshot capstone to give your Peacebreakers Cannons a significant damage increase and critical hit capabilities.
- With more perks focused on indirect damage, consider returning to Splashzone for a new, higher-level Firewerks shield (preferably fire resistance) to scale your power.
Levels 27-32: Explosive Synergy
- Pick up Lateral Plinking for one skill point to give indirect projectiles a chance to ricochet. Remember, your Cannons count, and you’ll heal for any damage they deal thanks to Ardid, effectively doubling this perk as both a damage and survivability boost.
- Spend five points to max out Vitriol. While seemingly niche, it synergizes exceptionally well with high-burst weapons like the Hot Slugger or those with a rapid fire rate.
- If you’ve ventured into Terminus Range after the Fadefields, you’ve likely completed this region’s story and unlocked the Vile Lictor boss, who can be farmed for Rafa’s Instigator class mod—a significant endgame item.
Levels 33-37: Amplified Elements
- Put five points in Concentrated Build-Up to significantly boost your damage the more shots you land while aiming. This also provides another source of bonus elemental damage (shock), allowing you to effectively deal with a wider range of enemy resistances without needing to swap gear.
- Activate the Beam Team capstone (replacing Double-Ought Autoshot) for additional status effects (corrosive and shock) and stacking action skill damage whenever you apply a status effect. This capstone is a cornerstone for elemental dominance.
- Activate the Bullet-Buddy Deluxe augment (replacing Instinto). While both are viable, the bonus fire damage from Bullet-Buddy Deluxe integrates perfectly with our growing suite of status effect perks, and its ability to keep your magazine full leads to more damage with Vitriol and even broken interactions with Torgue sticky weapons.
Levels 38-41: Action Skill Mastery
- Spend three points to max out Inspirado, further enhancing Rafa’s reliance on his action skill by regenerating cooldown from status effects.
- Put one point into El Alacran to simply increase the chance of inflicting status effects, synergizing powerfully with the Beam Team capstone and Inspirado for consistent elemental application.
Levels 42-46: Corrosive Sustain
- Head over to the This Year’s Gimmick skill tree and spend five points on Midnight Oil. This provides Peacebreaker Cannons with yet another blast of elemental damage (corrosive), which stacks the longer the skill remains active, boosting your sustained damage.
Levels 47-50: Endgame Preparation
- Return to the Remote Agent tree and dump three points to max out El Valiente for increased damage from all sources, scaling with how full your shields are. When paired with Resiliencia and a strong shield, maintaining potent damage stacks for opening fights is remarkably easy.
- Put your final point into Sitiar to further increase your gun damage. A simple, yet consistently effective boost to your overall firepower.
From here, you can seamlessly transition to the full Remote Agent endgame build detailed earlier, or continue refining this elemental-focused setup with additional gear. The primary distinction of this leveling build lies in its emphasis on versatile elemental damage, effectively covering weak spots you’re likely to encounter when frequently swapping out equipment for higher-numbered alternatives during your progression. - This Year’s Gimmick: Almost exclusively designed for melee combat, this tree is home to the formidable Arc-Knives action skill. Players can pursue two main paths here: a hybrid build integrating guns and ordnance with your action skill, or a unique playstyle that keeps you perpetually engaged in close-quarters combat with your blades out.
- People Person: While also gun-centric, this tree distinguishes itself from Remote Agent with a greater focus on infinite ammo and elemental damage. It excels in delivering burst damage, especially with a fast Apophis Lance action skill cooldown.

In the sprawling, chaotic universe of Borderlands 4, Rafa emerges as a Vault Hunter who transcends the typical soldier archetype. While his ex-Tediore origins might suggest a conventional path, the truth is far more intriguing. As your guide, TechTalesLeo, here at Digital Tech Explorer, I’ve delved deep into Rafa’s potential, uncovering best Rafa builds that span the spectrum from a steadfast turret-based strategist to a lightning-fast, melee-only assassin.
No matter your preferred combat style, Rafa’s versatility is truly unmatched – making him, in our extensive analysis at Digital Tech Explorer, the most diverse Vault Hunter of the roster. Below, I’ll guide you through three distinct Rafa builds, optimized for max level endgame, detailing the essential skills, augments, capstones, and gear. Plus, we’ll equip you with a potent leveling build to dominate the early stages of your Borderlands 4 adventure.
Best Rafa builds in Borderlands 4
Rafa’s three skill trees are arguably the most distinct among any Vault Hunter in BL4, each specializing in something entirely different:
- Remote Agent: This is Rafa’s most gun-focused skill tree, offering a wealth of buffs to your DPS, many of which also enhance your shoulder-mounted Peacebreaker Cannons. A dedicated branch for indirect projectiles makes it exceptional for Tediore and Jakobs weapons (or specific weapon parts), with a strong emphasis on Overdrive bonuses.
