Lara Croft Voice Actors Issue Cease and Desist Over AI-Generated Lines in Tomb Raider Remasters

As Digital Tech Explorer continues its mission to help developers and tech enthusiasts stay ahead of trends and make informed decisions, a recent controversy involving Aspyr’s remasters of Tomb Raider 4, 5, and 6 has sparked critical discussions about AI ethics in the gaming industry. Esteemed tech storyteller, TechTalesLeo, delves into the specifics, highlighting how AI-generated voice lines were reportedly used to imitate original voice actors without their consent. The former French voice of Lara Croft, Françoise Cadol, has reportedly issued a cease and desist to Aspyr over the issue. These changes appear to have been implemented in an August patch for the remastered collection, which includes The Last Revelation, Chronicles, and Angel of Darkness.

Tomb Raider Remastered's Lara Croft faces AI voice controversy

Voice Actors Detail Experiences and Aspyr’s Apology

Françoise Cadol, alerted by French Tomb Raider fans, stated she was never contacted by Aspyr about any changes to her original recordings and did not re-record any lines for the game. Similarly, Lene Bastos, the Brazilian Portuguese voice actor for Lara Croft in the same games, also spoke out against her performance being modified. In an Instagram video, Bastos said, “I was also upset with the new information that some of my lines in this game were restored using AI.” She clarified, “I am not against AI in any way, but we urgently need regulation on this tool because it can affect and harm all kinds of work and jobs.”

Following the public outcry, Bastos shared that she received a message from Aspyr apologizing for the unauthorized use of her voice. In the message, Aspyr claimed the adjustments were made by an “external development partner” and that the offending AI-generated lines would be removed within a few weeks. This message explicitly confirmed that the voice lines were indeed created by this external partner using AI technology, underscoring the pressing ethical concerns surrounding AI in creative works.

Exploring the Rationale for AI Use and Ethical Alternatives

The decision to use lower-quality, robotic-sounding AI voices has left many confused within the gaming community and among tech enthusiasts. An analysis of the affected audio suggests the changes were primarily made to the games’ tutorials. It is possible this was a quick and inexpensive method to update tutorial instructions to account for new control schemes in the remasters. However, this approach stands in stark contrast to more ethical practices seen elsewhere in the industry, raising important questions for developers and publishers.

For instance, when Nightdive Studios needed to update the tutorial for its System Shock 2 remaster to accommodate new controller support, the studio hired actors to record entirely new voice lines. This method respects the work of original performers and ensures a higher quality final product, presenting a clear ethical alternative to the use of unauthorized AI voice cloning. As Digital Tech Explorer advocates for transparency and informed decision-making, this example highlights a responsible path forward for digital innovation.
