Vampire Survivors Creator Luca Galante Launches Publishing Arm to Combat Exploitative Industry Practices

In the ever-evolving landscape of gaming, disruptive innovations often spring from unexpected places. Such was the case in 2021, when game developer Luca Galante launched Vampire Survivors – a project born from a desire for creative escape. What began as a diversion quickly blossomed into a phenomenon, birthing a nascent genre and capturing the imaginations of millions. Yet, as Galante reflects on his studio Poncle’s meteoric rise, his perspective on the broader games industry remains stark. In a recent interview, he offered a blunt assessment: “I see a lot of publishers I don’t like.” This sentiment, shared by many developers and tech enthusiasts alike, highlights a growing need for ethical practices in gaming software innovation.

Poncle’s Vision for Ethical Game Publishing

Today, Poncle, the creative force behind Vampire Survivors, has expanded significantly, now employing over 25 dedicated staff members. This growth has paved the way for a bold new venture: its own game publishing division, Poncle Presents. Galante’s motivation is clear: to forge an alternative to what he perceives as exploitative publishers “that try to exploit the platforms just to make money.”

Reflecting on an ethical approach to software development and publishing, Galante articulates a vision rooted in authenticity. “My point of view for what a publisher should do is, first of all, make genuine games, genuine products, something that has some real value, and then understand that not everything can be a breakout hit,” he explains. He laments the prevalent trend where too many publishers release “incomplete or in early access that actually never get completed, games that are put out there and left to die” simply because they don’t achieve immediate, landmark success.

For Galante, sustained post-launch support is non-negotiable, irrespective of a game’s initial commercial performance. “Once you put the game out there, you have an audience,” he stresses. “And as big or small as it is, that audience deserves to be treated fairly.” This commitment to the player base echoes Digital Tech Explorer’s emphasis on transparency and delivering real value to gaming tech enthusiasts.

Supporting Indie Developers and Sharing Success

Galante’s publishing philosophy naturally gravitates towards smaller, innovative titles from agile teams – games with accessible price points that offer an exceptional “price to gameplay ratio.” This approach is evident in Poncle’s initial publishing ventures, which include Doonutsaur’s engaging physics-based action game Kill the Brickman and Nao Games’ thrilling fast-paced roguelike Berserk or Die.

As Poncle Presents actively seeks partnerships with other indie developers, Galante underscores a critical responsibility: “try and let the developer realize their vision by enriching their vision, and not by trying to force a developer’s vision in a direction so that the game can make more money.” This focus on creative integrity over pure profit aligns perfectly with the values Digital Tech Explorer champions for the software solutions and development community.

Acknowledging that his vision for the publisher-developer relationship might appear “a bit idealistic,” Galante views Poncle’s publishing division as a powerful conduit to leverage the monumental success of Vampire Survivors for the greater good of its indie peers. “We got very lucky with Vampire Survivors,” he reflects. “The game has been so successful that—we definitely made some mistakes when it comes to putting the game out there, but we learned a lot and wanted to try to sort of share what we learned with other indies. It was a way to try and give something back to the indie community, share the luck.”
