How Many Levels Did Fallout’s Main Characters Gain in Season One?

The highly anticipated second season of the Fallout TV Show is on the horizon! Before we dive into the neon-lit casinos of New Vegas, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the first season and meticulously track the progression of our beloved main characters. As a platform dedicated to making technology both educational and entertaining, Digital Tech Explorer takes a unique look at how game mechanics might apply to the show’s compelling narrative.
By the conclusion of season one, Lucy had reunited with her father, The Ghoul was closing in on his family, Maximus had earned heroic status within the Brotherhood of Steel, and Thaddeus was undergoing a surprising ghoulification somewhere in the vast Wasteland. Each character experienced significant development, and while emotional growth is invaluable, our focus here is on the tangible numbers. Let’s crunch the data and determine just how many levels each character truly gained!
The Methodology: Applying Game Logic to the Wasteland
So, how exactly do we quantify character progression in a TV show based on a beloved game series? Our methodology is inspired by the intricate calculations of YouTuber ManyATrueNerd, who meticulously analyzed Lucy’s level by the season’s end, with a few Digital Tech Explorer-tuned adjustments.
We’ll primarily use the framework of Fallout 3, given Lucy’s initial character arc establishing skills like repair, science, and speech. For consistency and challenge, all characters are assumed to be playing in “survival mode,” which grants increased XP, but on a low difficulty setting—evidenced by how quickly some formidable creatures, like the Yao Guai, were dispatched. Our approach ensures thorough research and real-world testing (or, in this case, show-world testing) to deliver high-quality content.
Each character is assessed based on completing one main mission, supplemented by various side missions that yield less XP. Additional, minimal XP is awarded for discovering new locations and successfully neutralizing threats like raiders, ghouls, or common Wasteland creatures.
Lucy: Level 8

Total XP gained: 5,057
Vault Dweller Lucy reaches a respectable Level 8, accumulating 5,057 XP throughout the eight-episode journey. Here’s a breakdown of her leveling achievements:
- Successfully discovering new locations.
- Engaging in detective work within the mysterious confines of Vault 4.
- Eliminating a few pesky radroaches.
- Taking down several raiders, benefiting from shared XP while technically teamed with The Ghoul.
Smallest Accomplishment: While seemingly minor, Lucy regaining her finger is a significant personal triumph, making life in the unforgiving Wasteland considerably more manageable. It speaks to her resilience and adaptation, a valuable life skill for any tech enthusiast navigating complex systems.
Regrettably, Lucy missed out on a substantial XP reward by failing to recover the scientist’s head from the Gulper or defeat the mutant creature outright. A failed mission, certainly, but one that many players can relate to when navigating a challenging game or complex software project.
The Ghoul: Level 89*

Total XP gained during Season 1: 1,880
For The Ghoul, our seasoned Wasteland wanderer, an estimated 1,880 XP was gained over the course of the season. Despite an impressive tally of enemy eliminations, he engaged in fewer side quests and, having roamed the Wasteland for approximately 200 years, found very few “new locations” to discover for bonus XP.
Smallest Accomplishment: A moment of unexpected compassion earned The Ghoul a couple of XP points: saving Dogmeat. While he was responsible for the initial injury, his decision to aid the canine companion reveals a flicker of humanity, and crucially, ensures our favorite character’s survival!
Estimating his cumulative level is a fascinating challenge. Given his two centuries of survival and combat, a traditional level cap feels irrelevant. He projects the confidence and formidable experience of someone at a much higher echelon. Therefore, we’re pegging him at an unofficial Level 89, a veteran who’s seen it all but isn’t quite finished with his main quest.
“But wait,” some of you might exclaim, “Fallout 3 only allows up to level 30 with the Broken Steel expansion!” True, for conventional play. However, The Ghoul has been navigating the apocalypse for 200 years. It’s entirely within character to imagine him bypassing such limitations, perhaps through a “mod”—anything to maintain his edge and continue his relentless pursuit. A true veteran of digital innovation, bending the rules to stay ahead!
Maximus: Level 9

Total XP gained during Season 1: 4,100
Next, we assess Maximus. Despite being in the Wasteland before the season began, his time was largely spent either in cryogenic stasis or within the Brotherhood of Steel’s confines, meaning he effectively starts fresh in our leveling calculations, making his journey a testament to rapid skill acquisition.
Smallest Accomplishment: Returning Vault 4’s fusion core to its rightful place was a significant act of selflessness for Maximus. While he initially took it, sacrificing his power armor to ensure the Vault’s power supply demonstrates true commitment and sacrifice—a tough decision but a crucial one for team-based success.
Not all journeys begin equally. While Lucy started from scratch, Maximus received a head start due to his Brotherhood background. To progress from Aspirant to Squire in the Brotherhood, a character needs to be at least Level 6, implying he gained a baseline of 2,500 XP even before the season’s main events—a surprising bonus reflecting prior training!
Maximus then accumulated an additional 4,100 XP throughout Season One, primarily through impressive feats such as:
- Heroically taking down a Yao Guai and a Gulper (while in a squad with Thaddeus).
- Defeating Knight Titus and claiming his coveted power armor.
- Successfully locating the Enclave scientist’s head.
- Ultimately, earning his promotion to Knight by the season’s conclusion.
These achievements place Maximus solidly at Level 9, just 600 XP shy of reaching Level 10. We anticipate more valiant efforts next season, perhaps even a strategic coding script to optimize his XP gains!
Thaddeus: Level 50!?

Total XP gained: 186,700 (including ghoulification)
Initially, I hadn’t planned to track Thaddeus’s progress, but his brief yet impactful journey in the Wasteland proved too interesting to ignore. Despite limited screen time, his “XP antics” revealed a shocking twist in his character’s development.
Smallest Accomplishment: In a commendable effort to forage for food for his Knight, Thaddeus attempted to climb a tree, only to fall out. While unsuccessful in his hunt, his determination (or “moxie,” as we’ll call it) is certainly worth a nod. Sometimes, even failed experiments offer valuable data!
Thaddeus earned a respectable 496 XP during Season 1 through actions like assisting in taking out the Gulper and discovering a few new locations. He even reached Level 6 upon his promotion to Squire. However, his story takes an unprecedented turn after inhaling the snake oil salesman’s mysterious elixir, leading to his ghoulification.
This is where our system, and perhaps reality, gets a little… weird. Thanks to lore from Fallout 76’s Ghoul update, we know that transforming into a ghoul is an event typically associated with reaching Level 50. This implies that Thaddeus somehow gained an astonishing 186,204 XP in a matter of minutes! This rapid transformation is almost like a powerful software update, completely changing his operational parameters.
This dramatic spike utterly shatters our carefully constructed leveling system. It serves as a humorous, yet undeniable, reminder that sometimes, a compelling TV show narrative, like an unexpected bug in a program, can trump strict video game mechanics. But it’s certainly fun to imagine the character sheet and the unexpected “patch notes” that led to this development!
