Emiru Calls Out Twitch Over Negligent Response to Assault at TwitchCon

The digital streaming landscape, a vibrant hub of entertainment and community, is unfortunately not immune to real-world security challenges. This was starkly highlighted recently when popular streamer Emily-Beth “Emiru” Schunk issued a strong critique against Twitch following an alarming assault at a TwitchCon meet and greet on October 17, 2025. This disturbing event underscores a growing concern among high-profile creators, particularly women, who face increasing threats of in-person stalking and harassment from viewers.

A disturbing video, shared by X user @shenAndygans, captured the moment an individual forcibly hugged Emiru and attempted to kiss her. Her personal bodyguard, whom Emiru had specifically hired for TwitchCon, intervened swiftly, removing the man who then walked back into the crowd without immediate intervention from convention staff.

hello everyone, I am okay and thank you for all of the kind messages, sorry I cannot respond to them all 🩷Yesterday, the man who assaulted me was allowed to cross multiple barriers at TwitchCon and even in front of another creators meet and greet to grab me and my face and try…

In response, Twitch acknowledged the situation, labeling the event “completely unacceptable and deeply upsetting.” The platform announced it had banned the perpetrator from the convention, Twitch itself, and all future in-person events, also noting an increase in security measures at its meet and greets.

Emiru’s Disappointment with Twitch’s Handling

However, Emiru quickly followed up with her own critical response, directly challenging Twitch’s account and expressing profound disappointment. “I’m obviously shaken up by what happened and it’s not the first time I’ve dealt with something like this,” she wrote. “But to tell you honestly, I am a lot more hurt and upset by how Twitch handled it during and after the fact.”

She specifically disputed Twitch’s assertion that the assailant was dealt with “immediately,” labeling it a “blatant lie.” As clearly depicted in the shared video, the individual was seen departing the meet and greet area without any immediate intervention from event staff.

“He was allowed to walk away from my meet and greet and I didn’t hear he was caught until hours after he attacked me,” said Emiru. “And it felt like this only happened because of my manager pressing for it, not because TwitchCon staff present thought it was a big deal.”

Further compounding her concerns, Emiru revealed that TwitchCon staff did not check on her well-being following the assault. A video clip shared by the streaming news account @Awk20000 highlighted Emiru’s pre-event anxieties, where she stated, “I kept my meet and greet because I wanted to keep my show.” This underscored a significant issue: her contract with TwitchCon reportedly prevented her from canceling the meet and greet due to security concerns without forfeiting her other scheduled convention event.

This event is not isolated. Earlier in March, Emiru, alongside fellow creators Valkyrae and Cinna, experienced in-person stalking and harassment during a livestreamed event, including explicit death threats. Furthermore, just last month, Dexerto highlighted the growing unease among prominent streamers such as Valkyrae, Pokimane, and QTCinderella, who openly voiced significant apprehension about attending TwitchCon due to fears stemming from violent and obsessive viewers.

Given Twitch’s apparent oversight in preparing for such a foreseeable security threat, despite numerous warnings, and Emiru’s forceful condemnation of the platform’s post-assault response, the pressure is mounting. As a leading voice in the digital content ecosystem, Twitch now faces the imperative to enact genuinely substantial changes, not just to restore trust and goodwill among its most influential creators, but to safeguard the very future of interactive live-streaming events. For developers and tech enthusiasts following these trends, ensuring creator safety is becoming a critical measure of platform integrity in the evolving digital landscape, a topic Digital Tech Explorer continues to monitor for its impact on gaming and broader tech trends.
