Dungeon Tidying Turns Deadly: Goblin Cleanup’s Early Access Co-op is Pure Chaotic Fun

A goblin with their little dragon helper.

As a tech enthusiast and storyteller, I often find immense satisfaction in the simpler digital tasks. There’s a unique charm in a game that lets you switch off your brain and just… tidy. This is precisely the niche filled by Goblin Cleanup, an intriguing early access title that recently caught my attention. The premise is delightfully straightforward: as a humble goblin, your mission is to restore order to a dungeon – cleaning adventurer blood, repositioning furniture, and feeding a surprisingly lively mimic chest with any gruesome leftovers.

Using the dragon helper to light fires.

In its early access, Goblin Cleanup already offers several distinct locations, each boasting around 15 levels to explore. Playing solo, the methodical process of tidying the dungeon at my own pace was surprisingly tranquil. It was just nice to sort things out, completing each little task as a quiet personal victory. However, this peace and tranquility came to an abrupt, yet hilarious, end when I decided to check out what the co-op experience had to offer.

Transitioning to Co-op Play

Inviting a friend to join the goblin-janitor fun, we quickly jumped into a match. True to chaotic co-op form, there were absolutely no explanations or shared plans between us – a truly promising start! We soon got to work tidying the Library in the Dark Tower. While the adage “many hands make light work” holds true for getting tasks done faster, increasing our workforce also introduced a slew of new problems, most of which proved delightfully deadly.

Navigating Deadly Dungeon Traps

As befits any self-respecting dungeon, especially one designed to outsmart even the keenest-eyed adventurers, the Dark Tower is littered with booby traps. In one corner, a sleeping necromancer reposes, who, we quickly learned, gets incredibly agitated if disturbed. This meant no jumping or running around his vicinity – though I did once drop a table on his head with surprisingly little effect, suggesting he might be a remarkably deep sleeper.

Then there’s the ominous laser eye that locks onto you, delivering a one-shot explosion. This makes cleaning its room nearly impossible without carefully unplugging the trap first. More often than not, one of us would inevitably trigger the eye, sending both of us to an ashy demise as we futilely attempted to hide behind the same pillar. Such are the perils and absurdities of teamwork!

The Hilarious Chaos of Co-op Accidents

This is where the true friendly hijinks of Goblin Cleanup shine. The game is brimming with opportunities for you to accidentally – or perhaps not so accidentally – dispatch your companions, or more likely, for them to dispatch you. Whether it’s a misstep onto a booby-trapped tile that spikes your friend into a human (or goblin) shish kebab, or menacingly brandishing a mimic chest, threatening anyone who comes near with a gruesome chomped-up death, the ways for things to go wonderfully wrong are abundant.

At one memorable point, my friend unknowingly engineered a novel death trap by placing the mimic chest directly between two swinging axes. To follow them to the next area, I had to somehow navigate this bizarre obstacle course, dodging both blades and the hungry mimic. Needless to say, I couldn’t complete the challenge and ended up becoming dessert for the chest.

While co-op in Goblin Cleanup might make efficiency a more elusive goal, the sheer chaos and emergent hilarity it introduces create a genuinely memorable gaming experience. For fellow tech enthusiasts and gamers looking for a unique blend of casual task management and unpredictable multiplayer fun, this early access gem, as highlighted on Digital Tech Explorer, offers a compelling reason to dive in. It’s a testament to how creative mechanics, even in their early stages, can lead to some of the most engaging digital tales.
