Dawn of War 4 Channels Its Roots, Reintroducing Sync Kills and Large-Scale Battles

Dawn of War 4 Returns to the Series’ Roots

Every Dawn of War game has represented a bold stylistic departure from the last, but it appears Dawn of War 4 is looking to create a buffet stocked with the best ideas from the series’ history. According to a new interview from the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct, the design philosophy is heavily inspired by the original game. “In the end we said, ‘no, let’s really go with Dawn of War 1, that’s our guiding star,’” says creative director Jan Theysen, confirming it as the biggest influence on the upcoming sequel.

The development team unanimously agreed that the most beloved feature from the first game was the “sync kills.” These iconic animations, where enemy units physically engage and defeat each other in visceral combat rather than just dropping dead, are making a significant return. “We wanted to double down and push forward on sync kills,” explains Elliott Verbiest, senior game designer. “So not only just having synchronized animations between units killing each other, but also synchronized melee combat through our combat director system.” While the goal is to recreate the feeling of the original, not just the game itself, core features like base-building and large-scale armies are back, along with iconic factions such as the Blood Ravens and the Orcs.

Gameplay Scale and Visuals

For players concerned that the action might be stripped down, new footage should put those fears to rest. While players previously needed mods for the original game or had to play Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III to achieve a certain scale, Dawn of War 4 promises to deliver epic encounters right out of the box. Even without towering mechs, firefights showcase a generous number of squads and intricate buildings on screen, unequivocally confirming the return of the large-scale battles that fans have been craving.

Launch Content and What’s Next

There will be plenty of content for players to tear into when the game is released. Dawn of War 4 will launch with four campaigns playable in co-op, the return of the fan-favorite Last Stand mode, and three different varieties of skirmish matches. While a release date has not yet been announced, you can wishlist Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV on Steam to stay updated.
