Despite the monumental success of Red Dead Redemption 2, its online counterpart, Red Dead Online, has consistently struggled to live up to its vast potential since emerging from beta in mid-2019.
This isn’t to say it’s a poor game. With the right mix of players on any populated server, Rockstar’s epic multiplayer cowboy crime sim still ranks among the most entertaining open-world games available today. However, despite its initial ambition to rival GTA Online, RDO has largely languished in the perpetual shadow of its more popular modern-day cousin.

In fact, Red Dead Online has faced such neglect over recent years that even its most ardent supporters—including those who championed the #savereddeadonline petition of 2023—might have lost hope for the game’s future by the beginning of this year.

Now, however, with RDO experiencing a surprising resurgence—fueled by a handful of new missions, its first significant content update in years—and the GTA 6 release date beginning to crystallize, a compelling question arises: could Rockstar’s return to Vice City also pave the way for new adventures in the Old West?
Expert Commentary and Community Optimism for RDO’s Future
“Back in July, Rockstar unexpectedly dropped a brand-new Red Dead Online content trailer, the first in over four years. This gave me a real glimmer of hope that they might return to the game in a bigger way once GTA VI is out and their resources free up,” shares prominent Rockstar community commentator Ben, known as Videotechuk.
“Rockstar also appears to be expanding on the Strange Tales of the West content in the coming months,” he adds. “And with current rumors of potential current-gen versions in development, Rockstar could establish the foundation to deliver more Red Dead Online updates without being constrained by the Xbox One and PS4’s hardware limitations.”
A quick glance into RDO’s dedicated corner of GTA Forums reveals a palpable flurry of activity, reignited interest, and a general buzz around Read Dead Online in the wake of July’s update—a vibrancy that has been entirely absent in recent years. There, a diverse group of newcomers, lapsed wranglers, and dedicated players (including one who has logged nearly 10,000 hours) are all happily sharing tales from the frontier, making it a welcoming community to explore for fans.

It’s a safe bet that the core of Rockstar’s development team will likely remain focused on Grand Theft Auto VI long after its anticipated May 26 release next year. Many of those individuals, one would assume, will then transition to work on whatever form the next iteration of GTA Online takes following the base game’s arrival.
Once these major projects fall into place, however, wouldn’t it make strategic sense for Rockstar to shift some focus back to RDO, especially given the renewed community interest and clear opposition to abandoning it entirely? Ben certainly believes so.
“Furthermore,” Ben states, “the continued impressive sales performance of Red Dead Redemption 2, often outperforming many newer titles on the market, makes a return to RDO development a strategic imperative for Rockstar. It’s truly remarkable.”
