For dedicated Vault Hunters on Digital Tech Explorer, constantly swapping weapons to match elemental weaknesses in Borderlands 4 can be a hassle. But what if one weapon could handle it all? Enter the Rainbow Vomit, a legendary shotgun that’s as impactful in its damage as it is memorable in its name. This grossly named weapon lives up to its moniker, unleashing three different elemental pellets simultaneously. Similar to other sought-after legendaries, you won’t be able to farm the Rainbow Vomit immediately. It requires completing a series of side missions, or even the main campaign, before you can reliably grind for this powerful shotgun. Here’s what you need to do and who you need to eliminate to get your hands on the Rainbow Vomit.

How to get the Rainbow Vomit in Borderlands 4
You can farm the Rainbow Vomit from Leader Willem, located to the east of Grindstone of the Worthy in Carcadia Burn, adjacent to The Excrucible and the path leading into Terminus Range. To unlock this formidable boss, you’ll need to complete the following side missions in a specific chain, commencing in Carcadia:
- Enter the Electi Part 1
- Enter the Electi Part 2
- The Council Divided
- A Traitor Within
- The Mole’s Gambit
You can initiate the Enter the Electi questline and this entire faction saga from Levaine in Carcadia, the faction settlement located within Carcadia Burn.

Upon completing The Mole’s Gambit, you will be tasked with eliminating Leader Willem. Once he’s dealt with, Moxxi’s Big Encore machine will become available, allowing you to pay a modest fee to respawn him. This enables you to repeatedly farm him until you secure the legendary shotgun you desire.
Since the Rainbow Vomit is categorized as a world drop item, it has the potential to appear from virtually any source—be it a random chest, a defeated enemy, or even as a reward from the Weekly Wildcard Mission (which unlocks after completing the main campaign) when it features legendary shotguns. You can always preview the current rewards directly from your map. Notably, many Vault Hunters, including some of our own tech experts, have reported finding this legendary shotgun through the Weekly Wildcard Mission, showcasing its potential as a world drop.
The Rainbow Vomit distinguishes itself with the unique perk, Colour Spray, which, as discussed, allows it to fire three distinct elemental types simultaneously. The specific elements can vary between drops, so pay close attention to the combinations that best suit your playstyle. Given the mechanics of elemental damage, I’d personally advocate for a combination of incendiary, shock, and corrosive. This trio offers optimal utility against flesh, shields, and armor, respectively, ensuring maximum efficiency across all enemy types.
As a Jakobs’ manufactured shotgun, the Rainbow Vomit inherently possesses the ricochet effect on critical hits. Additionally, it can roll with a diverse array of other manufacturer parts, further enhancing its versatility and customization potential.
