Developer’s Vision: Beyond Adaptations and Direct Sequels
In an era where many successful games transition to movies and TV, and given the game’s intricate narrative and lingering mysteries (some still baffling players), we couldn’t help but ask Ros about a potential screen adaptation. Could the compelling world of Blue Prince ever make it to the silver screen?
“I have been approached,” Ros revealed, “and I regret to tell the fans that it is not something I’m currently considering. To me, Blue Prince is this one game, this one piece of art in the medium of games. I couldn’t really imagine it as anything else.”
He elaborated, “I’m a filmmaker myself. Before dabbling in game development, one of my dreams was to make a feature film. I have a lot of aspirations there, but I do think that each of my projects will be completely standalone. In that same vein, I don’t ever plan on making a direct follow-up to this title either. I believe that each project I create, whatever the medium, will largely be unconnected.”
The Vast Universe Beyond a Blue Prince Follow-Up
Despite the lack of a direct sequel, Ros offered a glimmer of hope for enthusiasts of the original game’s expansive lore. The title features Blue Prince‘s intricate world-building, including detailed histories of multiple countries, political rivalries, wars, and a sprawling family tree for its main character.
“That’s not to say I won’t necessarily tell a different story in a different genre that takes place in the greater world where Blue Prince exists,” Ros clarified. “It won’t actually be related to the original directly, and it certainly won’t carry the Blue Prince name.”
The developer acknowledged the prevalent industry trend, understanding why many creators pursue sequels even as he charts a distinct course for his next project.
“It would be very easy for me to create a direct successor to Blue Prince, given its success. But for me, I think that is a trap a lot of people fall into because it’s safer,” he mused. “I totally appreciate that any indie studio, or maybe even larger studios, have an even greater concern about being sustainable. A sequel often presents itself as the safest option for financial stability.”
An Expanding Portfolio: New Ideas from Tonda Ros
So, with a direct follow-up to Blue Prince firmly off the table, what innovative concepts is Ros exploring next? He revealed that during the development of his acclaimed puzzle game, he “probably came up with six other really good ideas.” These range from a “multiplayer puzzle game” to a “metroidvania idea,” though he remains undecided on which project to fully commit to.
“I have a lot of candidates,” Ros affirmed, “and certainly nothing that I could tease yet, because I’m not sure which one I’m going to go into.
