A Minecraft Movie: Director Details Mumbo Jumbo’s Cut Redstone Scenes and Other Axed Content

The recently released A Minecraft Movie features several notable nods to Minecraft pop culture, such as a tribute to Technoblade and shoutouts to DanTDM. However, fans have also learned about various cameos and sequences that didn’t make the final cut, including a scene with Valkyrae and ambitious inventions designed by YouTuber Mumbo Jumbo.

Director Jared Hess, in a recent interview with TechRadar, shed light on some of these omissions. “Yeah, there were a ton of fun sequences we wanted to do,” Hess stated. “Mumbo Jumbo, the popular Minecraft YouTuber and redstone genius, was working on a great scene that we just couldn’t do.”

The Tale of the Cut ‘Giant Piglin Robot’

One particularly fascinating concept that Hess shared involved a complex redstone-powered creation: “We had a sequence that involved a giant Piglin robot, which was a Trojan horse-type thing that worked via redstone. I storyboarded it, we had full animatics of it, and it was a really hilarious scene. But, we just weren’t able to do it.”

Mumbo Jumbo: The Redstone Virtuoso

For those unfamiliar, Mumbo Jumbo is renowned in the Minecraft community for his extraordinary expertise in redstone builds. His recent achievements, such as creating mechanical cogs and gears in vanilla Minecraft (using pure redstone, no mods) and a colossal redstone-powered fan, showcase the depth of his ingenuity.

As TechTalesLeo, your author here at Digital Tech Explorer, I find these builds incredibly impressive. I’m an avid redstone tinkerer myself and have often looked to Mumbo Jumbo‘s work for inspiration. However, the complexity and creativity he demonstrates are truly on another level – my brain simply isn’t wired for that kind of engineering marvel!

More Mumbo Jumbo Designs That Nearly Made It

Given his expertise, it’s understandable why Hess sought out Mumbo Jumbo to design elaborate redstone booby traps for the film. Hess shared his regret that these concepts couldn’t be realized: “It would’ve been super fun to have that Mumbo Jumbo-designed sequence. But ultimately it didn’t work out. He designed a bunch of crazy booby traps for us as well, but we couldn’t make those work in the confines of our movie, too.”

Authenticity: A Core Principle for Movie Builds

Despite the absence of Mumbo Jumbo’s specific sequence, Hess emphasized the production team’s dedication to ensuring that all builds featured in A Minecraft Movie were authentically replicable within the game itself. This commitment to in-game accuracy is something we at Digital Tech Explorer highly appreciate, as it bridges the gap between cinematic entertainment and interactive gameplay. Hess elaborated, “Everything we designed for the film, we wanted to make sure that you could actually go and make in the game. So, even Steve’s Lava Chicken Shack and all of those things, we’d be like ‘Gosh, are we sure we can do this? Does it work? Okay, let’s go to the game and build it right now. Right, it checks out. It’s bulletproof.’”

Hearing this, I guess my next personal project as TechTalesLeo is clear: recreating Steve’s Lava Chicken Shack in my own Minecraft world! It appears to be a relatively small build with a seemingly basic redstone pattern. And the reward? Deliciously (virtual) lava-cooked chicken. What’s not to love? Perhaps I’ll share my experience here on Digital Tech Explorer later on!
